The US secretary of state added that contacts with Russia will continue
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he discussed a new approach to resolving the conflict in Ukraine with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and will inform US President Donald Trump about it.
When asked whether Lavrov came up with some new ideas on the Ukrainian settlement, Rubio replied: “Yes, I think it’s a new and a different approach.”
“Again, I would not characterize it as something that guarantees peace, but it’s a concept that we will take back to the president today as soon as I finish with you,” Rubio added.
He added that contacts with Russia will continue.
Lavrov and Rubio held a one-hour meeting on the sidelines of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) events being held in Kuala Lumpur. The last time they met was during Russia-US talks in Riyadh on February 19.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the outcomes of the meeting that Lavrov and Rubio had discussed Ukrainian reconciliation, ways of restoring economic and humanitarian cooperation, and the work of diplomatic missions.
