Iran’s ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, was injured when a pager exploded in Lebanon.
“Mojtaba Amani, the honorable ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, sustained a minor injury,” the Islamic Republic’s embassy in Beirut stated.
“Fortunately, the ambassador’s overall condition is good,” the embassy added.
Mr. Amani’s wife said, “My husband, Dr. Mojtaba Amani, sustained minor injuries in a pager explosion in Lebanon.”
“Thank God, he is doing well now, and we are grateful that nothing happened to him.”
Hundreds of Hezbollah members were injured, and an unknown number were killed on Tuesday after pagers used by the Lebanese Shia militia exploded across Lebanon simultaneously.
Lebanon’s Minister of Health, Firas Abiad, said that while it was too early for an accurate tally, the number of wounded was in the “hundreds,” and there were some fatalities from the explosions.
Ambulances clogged the streets of Beirut, the southern city of Tyre, and villages across the Beqaa Valley and southern Lebanon, rushing the wounded to hospitals.
Pictures of the injured, with scorched hips and mangled hands, circulated across local media.
A Hezbollah official told Reuters the detonation of the pagers was the “biggest security breach” the group had experienced in nearly a year of war with Israel.
Video footage showed one man’s device exploding while he shopped in a supermarket, and bleeding men were seen lying on the streets in the city of Baalbek.
Explosions also occurred in the Dahiya neighborhood in Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold where a top Hezbollah commander was assassinated by Israel in July.
